Facebook can be an amazing way to getting your name out there.  When you think about the 1.4 billion Facebook accounts worldwide with 890 million daily active users… you quickly realize that Facebook is not a marketing tool you can ignore.

But really even with all that said, is Facebook for business… your business?

So before you add Facebook to your marketing plan, let’s talk about both the advantages of Facebook and, of course, the disadvantages of Facebook.

Let’s start with the advantages of Facebook.

The Advantages of Facebook for Business

Tons of Users.  We already mentioned that there are 890 million active users every day.  That speaks volumes.

Like, Comment and Share.  Facebook is ideal for uploading images and showcasing your products and services to followers. Followers can then ‘like’, ‘comment’ or even ‘share’ your images with their friends leading to more exposure for you.  It is ‘word of mouth’ marketing for the web!

Accessible Information.  The key to a successful Facebook page is updating your page regularly with useful and interactive content. You can use your page to connect with the public and showcase your business in an accessible manner.

Analytics.  When you update your Facebook page with more (and new) content you’ll get a better insight into how your fans engage with you; using their on-site suite of analytic reporting. Facebook analytics gives you information such as the day and time your fans are most likely to be engaging online, how much they interact with your posts beyond liking it, age and location demographics and visits to your page including a breakdown by referrer.

Facebook Advertising.  Facebook is one of my favorite paid traffic sources to market your business.  It’s an excellent way to target potential clients via the Facebook advertising platform. As a Facebook page administrator, you can aim your advertisements at potential customers through location, sex, age, and interests… and that’s just to name a few. There are also more advanced demographics to choose from such as relationship status, language, education, and work. Facebook advertising is an excellent means of directly targeting your audience.  This out my article on Facebook advertising for more information.

Link Your Facebook To Your Website.  Facebook can greatly improve your search engine optimization. When you publish content on your website and promote the link on Facebook, it will help drive traffic to your blog AND act as a backlink… giving your content more authority in the eyes of search engines.

Facebook For Image Or Video Hosting.  You can also use Facebook as an image or video hosting site. You can set privacy for an individual album to make your video and image collection private or public.  Moreover, you can always download your complete collection of Facebook photos and videos using the Facebook backup account feature.

Found In Google Searches.  It is easier to rank Facebook in Google than most other social media platforms.  You can use the description fields to help tell search engines what your page is about and help with ranking.

The Disadvantages of Facebook for Business

Time and Resources.  Having to spend time and resources to maintain your Facebook business page is probably one of the biggest drawbacks. Business managers need to be aware that setting up a Facebook page does not mean people will automatically follow you… that you actually have to actively promote the page to help it get found.   Your company will need a dedicated member of staff who can monitor and respond to posts on a regular basis.  If you don’t post to your Facebook page regularly, it reflects badly on the company: it’s not something you can just create and forget about.  That’s why clients often hire my team to help maintain their Facebook business page for them.  Feel free to contact me for details.

Advertising Budget.  You’ll need a reasonable budget to be effective with your Facebook paid advertising.  I typically recommend having a minimum budget of $1000/month if you want to do the proper testing to help make sure you get optimized Facebook advertising results.  Facebook has 2 primary types of advertising sponsored stories (boosted posts) and Facebook Ads.
 Within that, there are 2 payment main options; Pay per Thousand Impressions (CPM), where you pay a fee each time your ad is viewed 1000 times 
and Pay for Click (CPC) where you pay when individual clicks on your ad.

Facebook Privacy.  One of the major concerns and disadvantages of the Facebook is to do with Facebook privacy. In the past, it has created a lot of buzz due to sudden changes in Facebook privacy settings… but now Facebook has simplified its privacy setting. Due to ignorance and lack of understanding of Facebook privacy feature, people made a lot of mistakes.  In addition, you also have to be concerned that anything posted to Facebook instantly because of the public.   So you have to be careful about posting information too personal, whether in the video, pictures or text. Never give out too much personal information. As throughout the Internet, we should always keep in mind that nothing is private on the internet.

The Voice Of The Company.  You should not leave the management of your business Facebook page to an intern or someone who “thinks they know how to use Facebook“.  This is a common mistake made by businesses… they have someone managing their page who really don’t understand the overall message and brand of the company.  It’s important to represent your company in a professional manner. It is a good idea to set up a communications community that can monitor what is being published on behalf of your organization.

Fake Facebook Profiles.  Facebook is full of fake profiles of girls and guys. You will find tons of fake Facebook profiles… often with a beautiful profile picture of a girl.There is no limit to the number of these profiles.. and most of them are created by stalkers or by marketers to gain more friends and use it for their own marketing purposes.

Facebook can be a powerful platform to market your business.  Take a look at both the advantages of Facebook and the disadvantages of Facebook and make your own decision if Facebook is right for your business marketing plan.
