Are you looking to get some traffic to your website?

I understand where you are coming from completely.  Getting traffic to your website is really the whole point of having a website… you want people see what you have to offer.

And a popular way to get traffic is to have a blog… specifically to SEO blog posts.  But most people SEO blog posts incorrectly.

That’s why today I want to teach you how to SEO blog posts… and ultimately how to get leads with a blog.

How to SEO Blog Posts

I love blogging.

What I love about blogging is that although it takes time to build up and make it really effective, over time you’ll have something that will help generate leads and sales for you for years to come.  Every piece of content you create is evergreen… meaning that it will continue to work for you years after you create it.

And we do this by practicing SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

What is SEO?

There are lots of definitions of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but it really comes down to this, SEO is about getting free traffic from Google, the most popular search engine in the world.

There are also other search engines that you should forget either, like in YouTube, social media sites, forums, and article sites, which all have their own search engines.

SEO can be divided into two main components: on-page SEO (changes you can make to your webpage to rank better), and off-page SEO (work you do separate from your target webpage).

How to Get Leads with using On-Page SEO

This is where your blog really shines.  I’m going to tell you all about how to get leads with your blog using on-page SEO.  The elements on on-page SEO can be broken down into several areas.

HoHow to Get Leads With A Blog | How to SEO Blog Posts using On-Page SEO1. Keyword Optimization

So much can be discussed for keyword research.  It really is one of the cornerstones of SEO: any blog SEO tips article would be negligent to not talk about them.  But before talking about keywords… let me pause… and say I would not worry about keywords if you are just getting started blogging the very first time.  Just get blogging right away, and learn this and other aspects of blogging as you go.  Don’t get stuck by Paralysis by Analysis.

Before writing this blog post I used Google Adwords to help me determine what keywords I wanted to use.  If I am working on an important project, I’ll actually use a spreadsheet to track all the different versions of keyword phrases I want to use.  You want to write one blog post around each important keyword phrase you want to target (in this blog post, it was “How to SEO Blog Posts”).

How to Get Leads With A Blog | How to SEO Blog Posts - Using keywords2. Using Your Keywords

Now that you have your keyword phrase(s), you need to make sure it is in the title.  In this blog post the title, “How to Get Leads With A Blog | How to SEO Blog Posts”, contains our keyword phrase.

Next make sure it is in the first and last sentence (or paragraph) of your blog post.  If you look at this blot post, I cheat a bit by repeating the title of the blog post.

Nothing wrong with that.

Other people will actually make the effort of weaving it into the first paragraph.  I do the same thing for the last sentence of the blog.  Ok, ok… I cheat a lot.  But it works.  🙂

Ok, now write your content for your reader (the audience).  That’s the point, right?  You want your visitor to get value so they want to check out other articles on your site.  I expect you are getting value from this blog post, and that is the point.  You don’t want SEO to dominate the content because you have to write to two audiences: the search engines and your target readers.

Ok, now that you are done writing your content body add in your headers.  I recommend using roughly two H2 headers and three H3 headers as a minimum.  These headers serve a couple purposes.  They help break up the text to make it a lot easier to read.  These headers are also ideal places to put your keyword phrase.

Put in one version of your main keyword phrase in your H2 headers (like I did for this section).  Then add in a version of this keyword phrase for another H2 header.  In this blog post my main alternate keyword phrase is “How to Get Leads With A Blog”.  Use your H3 headers for secondary keywords you want to target but aren’t your main focus.  These can also be variants of the main keyword phrase.

Now sprinkle in the keyword phrase through the article (this means you’ll probably rewrite small parts).  Your keyword should represent roughly 1-3% of your total word count in the blog.  If you have too few keywords, then Google will not recognize that the article as being actually about that keyword.  If you use the keyword phrase too often (like 5% or more) then it is called “keyword stuffing” and you will be penalized for it.  So you really need to strike that delicate balance.

You need to try to have one keyword phrase bolded, one keyword phrase in italics, one keyword phrase in quotes, and one keyword phrase underlined.  These help tell Google “here’s my keyword phrase”.  Have you noticed how I have demonstrated this throughout this blog post whenever I mention how to SEO blog posts?  Ooops… I did it again.  🙂

Add pictures - How to Get Leads With A Blog | How to SEO Blog PostsAdd pictures.  But before you add your pictures make sure you rename the actual file to include the keyword phrase.  If you have more than one picture then make sure you have some pictures with your alternate keyword phrases… remember you need to avoid keyword stuffing.  Then when you insert the pictures into the blog post, add the keyword phrase into the Alternate Text for each picture.  I also add the keyword phrase somehow in the Image Title Attribute.

I think now you realize why I say don’t worry about keywords until you have a few blog posts under your belt.  It isn’t hard, but it is a lot to think about.

3. Meta Description and Meta Keywords

Ok, the content is done for your blog post.  Next take all the keywords you used and list them (separated with commas) in the meta keyword field.

The meta description is often (roughly half the time for Google) used for display in the search engine results.  But it is also an important place to strategically place keywords.  You want to have the main keyword as close to the beginning as possible.  In this blog post the meta description reads:

“Want to know how to SEO blog posts and get more traffic to your website? Blogging is a popular choice for getting found on Google. But even with them most powerful blogging system, you need to know how to SEO blog posts.”

As you can see, I repeated the main keyword phrase both towards the beginning and at the end of the meta description.  I also sprinkled in some of my other keywords to help increase the chances of them being also used by Google to rank the blog post.

4. Tags and Categories

We’re almost done!  Your tags should just be a copy of the keywords you used.

And then select one category that most closely matches where the “group” of blog posts this new blog post belongs.  If your blog is new, you’ll probably have to add some categories as you blog.

How to Get Leads Using SEO Blog Posts

Off-page SEO is just as important as on-page SEO, but this can be done later.  Writing the blog post correctly is an important key.  You don’t want to have to rewrite blog posts.  You want to try to create daily content… and therefore you want to write a blog post and get it right the first time.  Once written, I rarely come back to change it.  It is better just to write another blog post even if it is similar (but never create duplicate content… you may get penalized for that depending on how Google is treating it on a given day).

You can learn more about off-page SEO in the article, What is On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO – Search Engine Optimization and in this article, How to Get Backlinks for SEO.

Final Thoughts On How to SEO Blog Posts

We just covered the basic techniques I use to SEO blog posts on my own website, and that of my clients.  It is easy to do, but something that you should start implementing TODAY.

Now that you know how to SEO blog posts (and started to implement it) you should then start looking at how to get leads.  And in my opinion the main reason to have a website is to get leads.  But no matter the reason you have to build an online presence with a blog, I recommend you use the exact same blogging and marketing platform I use.
