I have to be honest.

Before writing this blog post I literally knew nothing about the meaning behind hashtags.  I had no idea how to use hashtags on twitter, or really any other social media platform.  I thought they were pretty much useless, non-value added things added to the end of messages.

I used to look at them and think that they were frivolous, and just some trendy thing.

But hashtags are getting more and more important for social media.  And so I realized I had better dig into this more.

So let’s get started with the basics on how to use hashtags on twitter and other social media….

What Are Hashtags

According to Wikipedia, “a hashtag is a word or an unspaced phrase prefixed with the hash character, #, to form a label. It is a type of metadata tag. Words or phrases in messages on microblogging and social networking services such as Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, or VK may be tagged by entering # before them, either as they appear in a sentence, e.g., “New artists announced for #SXSW2014 Music Festival” or appended to it. The term hashtag can also refer to the hash symbol itself when used in the context of a hashtag.”

How to Use Hashtags on Twitter, etc., to Promote Your Business

Assuming you have a public social media profile, when you use hashtags you make your posts visible to anyone who shares your interest.  It allows you to expand the scope of your posts beyond your followers.

So choosing the right hashtag can greatly broaden the reach of your social media posts to thousands of potential followers, fans or customers.

How to Create an Effective Hashtag

Basically a hashtag is a # and a relevant keyword or phrase.  You can put hashtags anywhere in your content… the beginning, the middle, or the end.  While some people like to weave their hashtags in the body of the content, may usually put them at the end.  It doesn’t really matter as long as your hashtags are relevant.

Now keep this in mind: Don’t turn people off by cluttering your content with excessive hashtags, or with hashtags that are too long (e.g. #thisHashTagIsWayTooLongAndIsAnnoying).  Keep your number of hashtags to 2 or 3 on Twitter, or 5 on Instagram.  Not sure about Facebook, but I say based on this try between 3 and 5.

Networks that Support the Use of Hashtags

Twitter – Where hashtags originated.  You can find trending topics on the left hand side of your screen.

Facebook – Clicking a hashtag on Facebook will take you to a separate page with posts using the same hashtag.  Obviously what is shown is based on the individual post privacy settings.

Instagram – This is great if you want to see similar pictures.

YouTube – This is more common in the comments section as users leave comments with hashtags, then click through the videos with similar hashtags.

Tumblr – If you type in tags at the bottom of the page, Tumblr automatically turns these into hashtags.

Google+ – This network uses hashtags like most of the others.  The exception is that it will attempt to add its own hashtags to your content if it believes it can match it up.  You can disable this feature if you want.

Pinterest – The hashtags in Pinterest are only clickable in a Pin description.  You can’t search for hashtags in Pinterest.

Kickstarter – You can sort by different hashtags to make it easier to find the

Vine – Adding a hashtag to the description will work similar to the other platforms.

Summary on How to Use Hashtags on Twitter, etc

Hashtags are becoming more and more popular.  I was just sitting in a webinar today when they talked about the importance of using hashtags to help promote your business.
