“How to Make a Facebook Fan Page for Business” written by Mike Marko.
Are you planning to make a Facebook fan page for your brand today?
It’s not a bad idea if you are. Facebook is the most popular social networking platform in the world. It has also become one of the most powerful tools for online marketers.
Many businesses are now beginning to use Facebook fan pages for promotion. They also use them to connect with the millions of users who log onto Facebook every day.
These Facebook fan pages are easy to create, manage, and use. Not only that, but these fan pages are essential to any brand’s Facebook marketing strategy.
A business’s fan page is the official account representing it on Facebook. It’s the account around which companies build their following on the platform.
That’s why every brand needs to learn how to make a Facebook fan page. In today’s blog post, I’ll guide you through it and show you the best way to make a Facebook fan page.
Easy Steps to Make a Facebook Fan Page
Before we go into how to make a Facebook fan page, let’s talk first about what a fan page is. A lot of people get confused in particular by the difference between business pages and fan pages. The truth is, there isn’t any!
A business page is essentially just one type of fan page. To make a Facebook fan page of any kind, you need a Facebook profile. That’s a personal account on Facebook.
Using your personal account, you can create any number of fan pages on the network. You can create a fan page for an advocacy, for instance. A fan page dedicated to a cause like “Saving the Trees” would be an example.
You can also create fan pages for actors, public figures, or — as you know by now — businesses.
Now before I get started with the steps on how to make a Facebook fan page, I’ll let you know the reasons for making a fan page first.
Reasons to Make a Facebook Fan page
There are a lot of Facebook advantages. But the chief reason to make a Facebook fan page is that it has features and functions a personal profile doesn’t. Those features and functions are vital for business owners.
For example, if you learn how to make a Facebook fan page, you’ll learn that you won’t have to rely on friend requests to build a following for it. That makes growing a following for fan pages easier.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Depending on the category you pick when you make a Facebook fan page, you can also get a host of useful features.
For instance, you can have ratings and reviews on your fan page if you pick the business category. You can also gain access to Facebook’s Page and Audience Insights. These give you analytics on your page’s performance and visitors.
The nice thing about a fan page is that it’s totally free. You can make a Facebook fan page without having to pay a thing.
You may need to pay for ads if you decide to use them to promote your Facebook page later. But creating and running the page are cost-free.
How to Create a Facebook Fan Page for Your Business
Now you know why you should make a Facebook fan page for your business. That fan page will become the core of your activity on the platform as well as your customers’ (both current and future) first stop when interacting with your brand on Facebook.
So you should make a Facebook fan page as soon as possible. Here are the steps to doing so:
1) Create a Facebook Page
The first thing you need to do to make a Facebook fan page is to log in to Facebook. Use your personal account to do it. If you don’t have one yet, just make one first.
Once you’re logged into Facebook, make a Facebook fan page for your business. To do it, click on the down-facing arrow located at the top right of the menu. Find the “Create Page” button in the drop-down menu.
After clicking the “Create Page” button, you’ll be shown the different page types available. You must select the appropriate page type for your brand’s services.
2) Select a Page Type
In order to make a Facebook fan page better, you need to understand each page type available. There are six different page types you can select:
- Local Business,
- Company, Organization or Institution,
- Brand or Product,
- Artist, Band, or Public Figure,
- Entertainment, and
- Cause or Community.
Choose Local Business if you own a store, restaurant, or any kind of physical retail business location. Businesses that want to gain visitors should choose this type.
Facebook will allow you to put the following information on your page with this type: your address, open hours, parking options, and location with a map. It can help interested consumers find your physical store faster.
When should you make a Facebook fan page of the Company, Organization or Institution page type? When your business isn’t exactly dependent on visitors to your physical location. E-commerce companies that operate completely online and franchises are examples.
Another page type you may choose is the Brand or Product. You can choose this page type if you’re a brand and if your products are sold through more than one retailer or website. Examples of businesses that may choose this are the Apple and Samsung companies.
For individuals like entertainers, or groups like bands, they may choose Artist, Band or Public Figure for their Facebook fan page.
The Entertainment page type is for pages focused on entertainment-related topics. Examples of pages of this type are fan pages for TV shows or books. There are even fan pages of this type dedicated to fictional characters or locations.
Finally, there’s the Cause and Community page type. Use this to make a Facebook fan page for causes you care about or communities you’re part of. There are several community fan pages sharing content about general topics like beauty, home decor, games, etc.
Once you’ve decided your page type, you’ll need to provide a name for your fan page.
3) Choose a Name and Category
Don’t underestimate the import of this step when you make a Facebook fan page. You need a unique name for your fan page and a category that describes it.
How can you choose your fan page name? Since you’re doing this for business, you can just use the name of your company or brand. You want your page name to clearly identify you, after all.
What about the page category? Just take a look at the list of categories available or start typing categories into the Categories box. The options closest to what you typed will appear in a dropdown box, so just select them.
Remember that you can change you categories as many times as you want after you make a Facebook fan page, though. There’s no need to take too much time agonizing over which one fits best. You can just change it later, after all.
4) Choose a Description, Website, and URL
You can add a description of your page too. In fact, you should be sure to add it. The more details there are on your fan page, the better for your business.
That’s because people visiting the page will be able to learn more about you — which was probably their main reason for visiting the page in the first place.
Also, you can add your website URL if you already have one. This is so visitors will know where to go to find your products or services on the Web.
Note that this is when you should also set your fan page URL. Choose this well! That’s because once you set it, you’ll be able to change it only one more time afterwards. Following that, you won’t be able to edit it ever again.
5) Profile Picture
If you want to make a Facebook fan page perfectly, you have to upload high-quality profile images following Facebook’s specific profile image dimensions.
Consider these when picking profile pictures:
- The profile picture must be at least 180 x 180 pixels, but it will appear on the page as 160 x 160 pixels.
- Facebook will scale photos under the minimum dimensions.
- For best results, upload images in sizes that are multiples of 180.
6) Set Up Your Preferred Page Audience
This is a recently-added tool that allows you to tell Facebook which audience is most important to your business. Your Facebook fans who fall in your specified target group are more likely to see all your future posts and connect with you.
To make the most of this tool, you need to know your business goals and target market first. Otherwise, you won’t be likely to get great results from it.
- Set a Location. You can specify countries or specific cities for your preferred page audience when you make a Facebook fan page.
- Specify preferred audience Age. You can add an age range between 18 and 65+.
- Select a Gender, if applicable.
- Add specific Interests if necessary. You can target people who already show interest in specific topics or even other popular fan pages.
- Finally, select a Language.
7) Add a Cover Photo and CTA Button
Once your Facebook page is created, click on the “Add Cover” button located at the top right. The image for the cover will be shown in 851 x 315 pixels. It should be at least 400 x 150 pixels, but aim for higher resolutions because they look better.
That takes care of the cover photo. Next is to make a Facebook fan page CTA. What’s a CTA? It’s a call to action. It’s an invitation from you to your page’s visitors for them to take a specific action.
Facebook fan page CTAs are usually attached to specific page buttons. On fan pages, they’re called CTA buttons. When you make a Facebook fan page, you can add them to the page to make it easier for your fans or visitors to engage you.
A “Call to Action” button helps you drive people to do specific actions like these:
- Book Now,
- Call Now,
- Contact Us,
- Send Message,
- Use App,
- Play Game,
- Shop Now,
- Watch Video,
- Send Email, and
- Learn More.
