In this article, I’m going to share my favorite positive thinking exercises.

I’ve had this posted on my office wall for many years now.
I’m pretty sure it originally came from some Bob Proctor training that I took over ten years ago.
Having the ability to have a positive mental attitude is not just a self-help theory. There are actually studies being done on the impact of your thoughts on your success level in all areas of your life.
Impact of Positive Thinking Exercises
In one study by Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina Fredrickson tested the impact of positive emotions on the brain by setting up a little experiment.
During this experiment, she divided her research subjects into five groups and showed each group different film clips.
The first two groups were shown clips that created positive emotions. Group 1 saw images that created feelings of joy. Group 2 saw images that created feelings of contentment.
Group 3 was the control group. They saw images that were neutral and produced no significant emotion.
The last two groups were shown clips that created negative emotions. Group 4 saw images that created feelings of fear. Group 5 saw images that created feelings of anger.
Afterward, each participant was asked to imagine themselves in a situation where similar feelings would arise and to write down what they would do. Each participant was handed a piece of paper with 20 blank lines that started with the phrase, “I would like to…”
Participants who saw images of fear and anger wrote down the fewest responses. Meanwhile, the participants who saw images of joy and contentment, wrote down a significantly higher number of actions that they would take, even when compared to the neutral group.

In other words, when you are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, you will see more possibilities in your life. These findings were among the first that suggested positive emotions broaden your sense of possibility and open your mind up to more options..- James Clear
What Are Some Positive Thinking Exercises?
So how do we develop and maintain positive mental attitude to open up the possibilities; especially when times are tough.
Meditation– within minutes you can go from stress to complete clarity and peace. If you are new to meditation, try this 10-minute guided meditation.
Try a stress journal– For one week you write down all of the things in your life that cause you stress or make you feel fearful.
This includes thoughts about the past and projections about the future.
Look for patterns in your negative thinking. Are there certain thoughts you keep on thinking and certain times of the day its more intense. With this awareness, you can analyze the most damaging thoughts and you can write an affirmation that will help you pivot your thinking to a better feeling thought.
If you want to boost your ability to think a positive thought then every day make a list of all the positive things that have happened to you. Some days this will be easier than others, but if you really think about it how bad can it be when…
“Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.”
“At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day.”
“Some 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation.”
You can easily come up with a list of 10 things. People tend to have a negativity bias that we constantly need to keep in check.
So think over the last few hours or last night and think of ten cool things and write then down
You Inner Child
Get in touch with your inner child-Find something that you like to do and just play. I recently happened upon this really cool adult coloring book in the check out isle at Whole Foods. It really is relaxing to color these beautiful pictures. (if you have some perfection issues practice going outside the lines)
Exercise– go to the gym, go for a run take a walk outside in nature.
Anything to get your body moving and the flow of oxygen to your brain and release endorphins throughout your body.
Final Thoughts on Positive Thinking Exercises
