Are you wondering why your Twitter business account is showing little to no progress?
It can be frustrating.
So you’ve decided to make the move from focusing on traditional, and start to ramp digital marketing. You have heard stories of how it is effective in reaching consumers. You have heard how many businesses are experiencing extreme growth and success using the internet.
And so you thought… “How hard can it be?”
A common misconception many of businesses have is that social media marketing is easy. Create an account, sit back and wait for all the customers to come rushing to get a piece of you.
However, this isn’t the case.
Customers don’t just come to you, especially on Twitter. Twitter deals with millions of real-time information and it isn’t easy to stand out amongst the crowd.
In this article, we’ll discuss everything what when setting up a new Twitter business account.
Setting Up a New Twitter Business Account Properly
Business owners often invest little effort in building accounts. Some just fill out what’s being asked for, without giving much thought of how it will be perceived by potential customers.
It is important to remember that your account is your business’ representation on the social media platform. Hence, every aspect and information displayed on it is vital to catch the attention of your followers.
Avoid the mistakes discussed below in order to ensure the success of your Twitter business account.
Building a Substandard Business Profile
A good business profile should be complete. You profile must include necessary details a customer looks for. A complete, relevant profile gives your audience an overview of what you can offer and shows what your business is about.
Using Just Any Profile Picture
Twitter’s default profile picture is a human silhouette. Your profile automatically uses this if you haven’t uploaded a profile picture.
To avoid appearing inactive to your customers, it’s best that you upload a profile picture.
Never use a cartoon character because it makes you look unprofessional or other images that are unrelated to your business.
Your profile picture should represent your brand or company. Because of this, it’s advisable to use your logo to make your account more distinct to customers.
No Twitter Header
For Twitter headers, use a custom-made, high-quality photo. Don’t use small photos of any dimension that is below the recommended 1500×150 pixels.
If you’re having your header created, download the template online first. Using the template makes sure areas in your photo are visible.
Like profile pictures, the key is that it should represent the brand and the business. But that doesn’t mean using the same photo as your profile picture.
An example is to showcase one or all of your products. Use pictures that complement brand colors on your header as well.
Plain Description
The description should be well thought out. It should be brief but informative.
State what the business is and what it specializes in. Doing so makes it easier for users to know what you’re about. The goal is to capture the essence of your brand and convey what value it can provide the customers.
Add contact details as well for easy reach. Customers will most likely look for it in the description.
Taking Tweeting Too Lightly
A Tweet is a broadcasted message containing 280 characters or less. These make up your profile’s content and are your business’ instruments to capture people’s attention. That’s why tweets need to be well thought out.
With carefully constructed Tweets, you can deliver content that meet audience expectations. This will make your followers want to hear more from you.
Lousy Tweet Content
People follow accounts whose content interests them. Put considerable effort into what you tweet as this can make or break your Twitter marketing strategy.
Remember to never tweet unrelated content. But at the same time, don’t just use any kind of content as well. They should be relevant. If not, this will end up disappointing your customers and cause them to lose interest.
Instead, plan your content carefully. Plan when and what to post. Liven up tweets with photos, videos, and article snippets that are about your brand. A tip is to relate your brand to fads and trends.
Not Timing Your Tweets Properly
When posting, you’ll need to have an audience. Make sure your followers are active when you post. There’s no point of a well thought out tweet when your content can’t be seen by potential customers.
But that doesn’t mean you should go overboard with tweet frequency. Overdoing it makes you seem desperate. Instead, Tweet during peak hours. Aim for hours that have the right amount of active users.
Simply Retweeting and Repeating
Retweeting is the act of sharing your or another person’s tweet. While it’s good to retweet to show engagement, it should not be done frequently and should serve as a last resort.
Remember, followers want and expect new content. What business owners fail to see is that a profile filled with retweets and repeated content loses followers. They’ll see no point in following you if you don’t come up with something new and entertaining.
Poor Use of Hashtags
Twitter was the first platform to introduce Hashtags. A Hashtag is the “#” symbol that is written before a certain word or topic related to the tweet.
The purpose of this is to make browsing for certain topics easier. In turn, these hashtags help your tweets get discovered. Hashtags also come in handy when you want to be in with a trend.
But keep in mind to use one relevant hashtag per tweet. Refrain from abusing it. Spamming and including a lot of them will indicate shameless self-promotion. Also, it makes your tweet difficult to read.
Not Engaging at All
Twitter is all about connecting. Twitter users can engage with other people by using mentions or direct messages.
A mention uses the “@” symbol. This is used to mention another user. Keep in mind though that conversations that take place using this are publicized. Direct messaging, on the other hand, lets you privately message a user. The way to do it is to just go to their profile and press “Send message”.
With these features, Twitter allows you to build your own community of customers and fans. Engagement keeps your profile active, and it establishes an image of being responsive.
Forgetting to Monitor Statistics
A grave mistake business owners commit is to not monitor progress.
After setting up a new Twitter business account, remember to take track of your account growth. Analyze what topics and types of content worked best and use this to your advantage.
Although not a built in feature, there are numerous tools to help monitor statistics. You can just download them online. With these tools, you can find out which the most used keywords and hashtags.
Use these keywords and hashtags by including them in tweets. Some tools even let you discover users connected to your brand. With a list of potential customers, you can message them directly and introduce your brand.
