The social media marketing techniques of two years ago… even one year ago… no longer works like it used to. Yet people are still trying to make them work.
It’s like fitting a square peg into a round hole. Actually, it’s more like fitting a start shaped peg into a round hole… it may fit (if you break off the corners) but it isn’t going to get you the results you want.
Let’s first talk briefly why this is now the case.
Why Old Social Media Marketing Methods Don’t Work Anymore
Times are changing.
And just like technology is constantly evolving, so are social media platforms.
- Facebook seems like it changes it’s algorithms monthly.
- Instagram (owned by Facebook) is constantly changing it’s algorithms.
- Twitter is changing it’s algorithms (recently the changes shut down a large number of Twitter accounts).
Ok, you get the picture. The platforms are changing
Plus the bigger businesses are starting to get serious about their social media marketing. This is in turn driving up advertising spending.
Then throw on top of that you are competing against an entire globe of people for attention.
So it’s no wonder why techniques that even worked one year ago no longer works.
And you’ve probably already experienced the after effects. The approach of many companies of just posting content, with maybe the occasional boosted post, no longer gets the desired results.
So Now What?
Ok, I’ve told you about what doesn’t work.
What does work is coming back to the basics, and using more old school marketing techniques that worked prior to the past couple decades COMBINED with a proper framework in place to get the message out.
